Clean Sweep at Bragato!
Mt Difficulty Wines Ltd wins The Champion Wine of the Show with the prestigious Bragato Trophy awarded to Robin Dicey for the Mt Difficulty Pipeclay Terrace Pinot Noir 2002 at the 10th annual Bragato wine awards in Blenheim on Saturday night.
The Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir also collected The Champion Red Table accolade and the Mike Wolter Memorial Trophy for Champion Pinot Noir Table Wine.
The Bragato awards are unique as they aim to recognise the grower for viticultural excellence and vineyard management. The competition is held annually in conjunction with the grape and wine industry Romeo Bragato Conference.
Robin Dicey, Head Viticulturalist for Mt Difficultly Wines, sums his vineyard philosophy up concisely by stating “great wines are made in the vineyard and my job is to make life simple for the winemaker”. This works in harmony with Mt Difficulty’s philosophy of striving to craft distinctive wines that reflect the unique characteristics of each vineyard, “if we get it right in the vineyard the ultimate result for Mt Difficulty is to produce a single vineyard wine such as Pipeclay Terrace”.
Pipeclay Terrace Vineyard (3.2 hectares on north facing slope of Felton Road) offers unique challenges, created mostly from the clay and gravel outwash from the goldmining era. The vineyard has very low fertility and represents one of the world’s few vineyards on a man-made soil profile. The vines, a mixture of Burgundian clones planted on their own roots in 1994, require low cropping levels (less than 4 tonnes per hectare) and careful viticultural management to achieve the desired results.
In addition to the trophies mentioned above Mt Difficulty also achieved the following awards at Bragato:

Silver – Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg Pinot Noir 2003
