Vintage 2001
| Vintage 2001 | 25-May-2001 | | | | Harvest started on April 6th with twelve tonnes of Sauvignon Blanc and finished on May 15th with the last of the Pinot Gris. The dry warm weather of summer continued right until the beginning of May, allowing the grapes to gain ultimate ripeness and balance and the resulting wines could be the best yet. Our new winery, commissioned at the beginning of the year and designed by our winemaker, Matt Dicey, was put to the test and passed with flying colours. Matt is thrilled with the result, describing it as being "an extremely functional winery as well as being an exciting place to work". With so much good fruit coming in, the winery resources were stretched with 280 tonnes being crushed, 140 of which was Pinot Noir. Despite some invaluable new labour-saving tools such as the pneumatic plunger, the tube-in-tube heat exchanger and the steam cleaner, the winery team still clocked up unenviable hours. Fuelled by immeasurable quantities of chocolate, Otago's best coffee, and great meals provided by the share-holders, Matt and his team of three (ably assisted by occasional help from the sales and marketing team) toiled late into the night, day after day. That they remained cheerful and good- humoured throughout is a great credit to them, and the post- vintage party promises to reward them suitably! |
